Your home is not insured in the case of a nuclear accident Natalia Erager owns a home in Scarborough, ON, less than 10 kms from the aging Pickering Nuclear Station. She explains that no home owner in Ontario is insured in the case of a nuclear accident.

The World

Nuclear power: Game over Nuclear power is a clunky technology borne out of a bygone Cold War era. Its best days are over and it cannot form a key part of sustainable energy policy.

A Canadian company (OPG) wants to start dumping its nuclear waste next to Lake Huron "Water is life. The last place to bury radioactive nuclear waste is less than a mile from the Great Lakes, the drinking water for 40 million Canadians and Americans."

"It is not a question anymore; radiation produces cancer, and the evidence is good all the way down to the lowest doses." The late Dr. John Gofman,Professor Emeritus, University of California

Continued Detention of 8 Anti-Uranium Environmental Defenders in Tanzania
On Dec. 22, 2016, a group of 8 Tanzanians interested in environmental issues were arrested in Malawi. They have been detained under deplorable conditions and have been charged with carrying out a reconnaissance operation without license.

Radioactive waste rolling through your town?
That tanker truck next to you on the highway may contain "the most radioactively hazardous materials on Earth", travelling from Canada (Chalk River, Ontario) to South Carolina—unless they're stopped by a lawsuit that 7 environmental organizations have filed.

Ontario

83 % of Ontario residents say they oppose the Wynne Government’s nuclear plan, a survey released by the Ontario Clean Air Alliance (OCAA) found. When asked “Do you support or oppose Ontario Power Generation's proposal to raise its price of nuclear electricity by 180% to pay for extending the life of the Pickering Nuclear Station and re-building the Darlington Nuclear Station?”, 83% said no, 4% supported it and 13% didn’t know.

Renewables and Conservation

Numbers don’t lie: We’ve reached a tipping point for renewable energy It’s no longer fervent environmentalism driving the transition to clean energy – it’s economics. According to the International Energy Agency, already half a million solar panels are installed around the world each day and, in China, two wind turbines go up every hour.

A Convenient Truth - Fighting Climate Change Turned Into a Profitable Business The cost of generating energy through solar and wind sources has dropped to the point of being competitive against coal and natural gas, a paradigm shift which should attract investors worldwide to the renewables.

Take Action!

Sign our petition to close the old and dangerous Pickering Nuclear Station when its license expires in 2018 rather than extend its life 'till 2028 which is OPG's hope. And then send it to all your friends.

Can you spare a few hours to leaflet blitz your neighbourhood mailboxes? Help us make the closure of the Pickering nuclear station a public issue. Contact: angela@cleanairalliance.org

Please send Premier Wynne a message asking her to order OPG to develop an immediate decommissioning plan for Pickering and to close this dinosaur by 2018 (when its license expires) at the latest. Background here.

Stop The Great Lakes Nuclear Dump Sign the petition calling on Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna to reject OPG's nuclear waste dump on the shore of Lake Huron.
