New Study Shows How Clinging to Nuclear Power Means Climate Failure By suppressing better ways to meet climate goals, evidence suggests entrenched commitments to nuclear power may actually be counterproductive.

Radioactive liquid nuclear waste: stop the transport Radioactive liquid nuclear waste could be transported by armed convoy, 1100 miles over the Great Lakes water system from Chalk River, Ontario to the Savannah River Site in South Carolina for the first time, and it could begin as soon as September. A legal challenge by 7 non-profit groups was filed requesting an injunction from the federal court in Washington, DC, to halt the transport until an adequate environmental impact statement is completed. Listen to Gordon Edwards explain the issue here in this 14 min. CBC radio interview. Background info here.

Melting Greenland ice may expose entombed nuclear waste Back in the mid-1960s, in the midst of the Cold War, the US Army shut down a base in NW Greenland, home to mobile nuclear missiles. When they abandoned the base, the army left behind an array of biological, chemical and radioactive substances that were expected to remain encased in the ice forever. Now with climate change causing unprecedented losses from the Greenland ice sheet, "forever" is not likely to be for as long as the US Army had hoped.

Britain should cancel its nuclear white elephant and spend the billions on making renewables work Renewables would be cheaper than Hinkley (nuclear), which would take 10 years to get going and represent a huge, ongoing cost to bill payers, if it ever worked at all.  Editorial from The Economist.

The Man Who Saved the World The story of Lt. Colonel Stanislav E. Petrov who held the fate of the world in his hands for a few crucial minutes. When an alarm went off indicating that 5 American nuclear missiles had been launched against the Soviet Union, he followed his gut feeling and went against orders, convincing the armed forces that the threat was a false alarm, saving the world from nuclear disaster.

Energy efficiency can reduce Ontario’s electricity demand by almost one-third Any way you cut it, improving energy efficiency by paying a fair price for conservation measures, creating opportunities for a wide variety of organizations to lead efficiency efforts and helping consumers maximize their savings makes economic and environmental sense.

5 Charts That Illustrate The Remarkable LED Lighting Revolution The accelerated deployment of light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs is on track to save U.S. consumers and businesses $20 billion a year in electricity costs within a decade, which would lower U.S. CO2 emissions by some 100 million metric tons a year!
