With zero emissions and no waste, renewable energy sources dramatically reduce the environmental impact of generating electricity.  Even high-efficiency combined heat and power plants can help by producing power with far lower emissions than a coal plant. 

Only nuclear power produces radioactive waste that has to be managed for thousands of years – a very big tradeoff for its form of so-called “zero emission” power.

Of course, the cleanest form of energy of all is the energy we avoid using by increasing efficiency or stepping up conservation efforts.  Ontario residents use one-and-a-half times the electricity per person as our neighbours in New York State – the legacy of a system that has encouraged wasteful practices instead of rewarding efficiency.  There is huge potential for increasing efficiency in Ontario and we have barely scratched the surface of what can be done.
